General Information and Introduction
Thank you for wanting to study astronomy with the Hampshire Astronomical Group in order to obtain your DofE’s Science and Technology Skills Award(s). We hope you will enjoy this experience and that it will kindle a lifelong interest in astronomy and the sciences.
We have a small team of members who are willing to support you in your studies. If you wish to register with us to undertake a DofE’s Science and Technology Skills (Astronomy) Award, your parents will need to contact us and register you. They need to complete and post the Registration Form available on this link.
You should discuss with parents, friends and us to decide which award you wish to study. This can be either the Bronze, Silver or Gold awards. These awards progress in difficulty and in depth from the Bronze award, the easiest, to the Gold award, the hardest. All worksheets have been made available on our website once you have been registered with us.
We expect you to spend the required time on each sheet and then meet with one of the members of the observatory periodically to discuss your progress. and You will also need to give us an opportunity to answer any questions you may have about your study and for us to offer guidance and help. There will also be an opportunity to look through some of the telescopes at the observatory when you visit if the sky is clear. This activity may also help in your award studies.
As the observatory is situated out in the countryside and there is a very poor public transport network to us, any visits to the observatory must be made with you being accompanied by a parent or guardian.
Before you register it will be helpful if your parent or guardian downloads some additional information about the activity, this is available here.
Once you have been registered with us we will contact you, we have an initial meeting with you at the observatory and then give you access to the worksheets on our website so you can start your studies.
